Why are Wound Infections a Big Deal?
Wounds are Easily Contaminated with Bacteria
Bacteria are present on the surface of the skin and, consequentially, on the wound. Yet, they are usually incapable of contaminating the internal skin tissues and starting proliferating. But if an injury was done by an item with a bacterial load or the wound was left untreated, the infection is very likely to develop.
Wound Infections Lead to Severe Conditions
If left untreated, bacteria may proliferate into the internal epithelial tissues. It may cause necrosis and gangrene in the damaged body part to the point it cannot be cured, and, eventually, multiple organ system failure (MOSF). Wound infections are cured difficult even in their early stages, and even so, surgery is typically needed.
